Did anyone mention Adobe 8 standard, not the reader? It tries to use OCR when accessibility feature is turned on. I recently tried out, and it does a decent job.

It comes packaged with OCR (which makes it a large download).
Note that
the Google Tesseract OCR used is the best free OCR at this time,
but it
is not as good as commercial OCR software.

Thanks, that was what I was looking for. Do I need MS Office to
use ocr, or does your program come packaged with ocr?

Have a great day,
Alex

Sorry about the confusion, Alex. My old site is still up because
of
enough people who find the non-programming material useful. My
new site
with a programming focus is
http://NonvisualDevelopment.org
The Open Source Projects page has links
to my programs, including PDF to TXT. It's still actually stored
on the
Empowerment Zone server at
http://EmpowermentZone.com/p2tsetup.exe

Remember that to try OCR, one needs to check the checkbox called
Image Format.

There was a converter from Jamal that could convert and do ocr,
but I could not find it on the empowermentzone.com site, only an
old dos version that did not have the features I saw in the
email.

Have a great day,
Alex

A few weeks ago I saw an email for a pdf converter. Could
someone re-send
that link? I deleted the email by mistake. Thanks.

There are a lot out there, I like using pdftotext or pdftohtml
Just use apt if you are on linux to install them:
apt-get install poppler-utils
Should get pdftohtml and pdftotext...

HTH, and just google for a win version since I dunno about that.
