ah, I knew a lot of the stuff was less than useful, thought there might possibly be a bit more to salvage, but ah well

Hi,The archives of blind programming were trashed because of a virus on the server. Later, the hard drive on the computer that stored the oldest stuff went. Most of the stuff is very old, and frankly, we have it collected on various sites such as the one the elf has and Jamal's http://www.nonvisualdevelopment.org/. It needs to be decided how to make this site something that will not die because something happens to one person.

I think Jim Homme said BlindProgramming.com was lost due to a virus, but he can clarify if I misunderstood. A wiki sounds great in theory. In practice, however, I have observed that very few people actually contribute writing to a wiki. I have seen this over and over, where someone proposes a wiki, encouraging responses say it's a great idea, and then it never gets off the ground, or is initially launched but hardly anyone actually contributes to it. I have seen versions of this idea on this list, the JAWS scripting list, the Window-Eyes scripting list, the BlindMath list, and others. So, I have no problem with the idea, itself, but ask those interested why do they think this time that it will turn out differently? Jamal On 7/5/2010 1:50 PM, Ken Perry wrote:
Well the wiki is not what killed it what killed it is someone did not pay the net bill. That could have happened even if the page stayed the way it was. Same for Elf with his site. This way the communitycan directly effect the site's content, which will probably lead to more relevant and up to date information. Swell idea, I think. We could runthe email list from there in fact we could run multiple and we could havea droople page where everything is kept. The same people that work on it now could do what little they can do an we could all share the responsibility. ken -----Original Message----- From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jackie McBride Sent: Sunday, July 04, 2010 8:28 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Where did the blind programming site go?: was: programming tutorials I think it's the only way to go, Ken. Drupal is powerful enough to host anything from a simple website to a large online community, accessible both in terms of its administration& useability,& is perfectly suited for something like this. I've partnered w/a web developer friend of Mine, Elise Lonsdale,& used drupal to make http://jawsscripting.lonsdalemedia.org We've found it to be a rewarding venture in terms of the way Drupal works. It does have somewhat of a steep learning curve initially, but I think that's the same w/all web development. Elise says it's a lot easier than other CMS's she's worked with. My vote is, if u can get it, we should do it. On 7/4/10, Ken Perry<whistler@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:I don't understand why we don't get a droople page set up. If people are interested I will talk to APH about hosting a true droople site for blind programmers. I would end up being the one choosing editors so I could let any number of you guys edit the page. It would be done with the simplewikilanguage and would be easy to use. What do you all think? ken -----Original Message----- From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of The Elf Sent: Sunday, July 04, 2010 6:46 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Where did the blind programming site go?: was: programming tutorialsalright, sounds great, as I said in my post, I would do the work, but mytime is getting squeezed out of existence, adding one page link will be no trouble, its the maintenance and such that would wring me out. I'll send you a blanked body page so all the color and other stuff matches the site, and you just fill in the body, I usually use H2 headers for a section like changing from the C section to the C++ one, and h3 for sub divisions within a section myself, but as long as it's navagateable its great. elf Owner: Alacorn Computer Enterprises Specialists in customized computers and peripherals - own the might and majesty of a Alacorn! www.alacorncomputer.com proprietor, The Grab Bag, for blind computer users and programmers http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alex Midence"<alex.midence@xxxxxxxxx> To:<programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, July 02, 2010 10:28 PM Subject: Re: Where did the blind programming site go?: was: programming tutorialsHello, Elf, I would be willing to write the page. I can send it to you and you could link it to your site. I don't have website hosting at the moment or I'd do it. It would make much more sense to place it in a frequented site like yours or the blind developers' site though. Could structure it by giving each language a heading with links to the corresponding tutorials in an unordered list. Make it quick to navigate that way. Would also make sense to link any editors, ide's and compilers within it as well so it's a one-stop experience. I think this would make for a flexible format because if someone wants to let us know about a link to tutorials for a language we don't have, all we have to do is add a heading for it Any thoughts?
