It might also could be something other than AV software
(firewall or other anti-malware).

There's still a dial-up forum at
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/dialup so asking there should
help. There's also info at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/dial
and
http://www.tschmidt.com/writings/POTS_Modem_Impairments.htm,
and I believe this is the dial-up area at
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/winxp_modem/index.shtml.

External models are hardware, if they're not USB. So that
pretty much means serial. There may be some external USB
hardware modems, can't recall. If he has any ISA slots on the
mobo most of those were hardware modems and there's still some
of those around, and there still should be "a couple or so" PCI
hardware modems.

He has a 2.4ghz Athlon cpu and 1gb ram so he has enough power
for the
winmodem.

It's getting hard to find hardware modems now, but until
broadband is
more available I have to find one for him.

And I will try the av trick too.

Thanks Clint.
