Click the Start button and start typing.  Cursor is automatically placed in
the search box.  Results will display in the Start Menu window.

There is a way to add Search to the right side of the Start Menu but I don't
remember where I saw it at.

I'm not running Vista right now, but you should be able to add the Search 
function to your Start menu by right clicking on the Start button and 
selecting Properties from the menu.  In XP, you would than click on the 
Start Menu tab and scroll through the list of what's available, checking the

ones you want.
