That is why I said that 2 GB may be the sweet spot (that is, price). If ram for the machine is cheap enough, get 4 gb even if the OS can only use 3.1 gb of it. Heck, I've gone so far as to set up a RAM disk before and moved my swap file to the remaining ram area (4 gb - 3.1 gb = .9 gb or so). As long as I don't run TOO many programs, the system becomes really, really fast. ----- Original Message ----- From: EddieB <fasteddieb216@xxxxxxxxx> To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 11:24 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: New (to me) computer There are Ramdisk's that could use more, but I think there are a lot of compatibility issues with such software, so they never really got too popular. That PC can only take a maximum of 4GB anyway (if you use 1GB sticks in each of the 4 slots). That older DDR2 memory is fairly expensive compared to newer memory types. -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of recklessmaverick@xxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 9:08 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: New (to me) computer Ahhhh I had forgotten about that. I've been around 64-bit systems for too long. Isn't there a utility out there that will use that extra GB of RAM as a RAM disc? -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of LARRY SOUTHERLAND Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 8:50 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: New (to me) computer Actually, all 32-bit operating systems will only use 3.1 GBs of RAM. Nevertheless, 2 GBs is the "sweet spot," meaning that less than that can become an "issue" if one runs a lot of apps at one time and price-wise, for most types of RAM, 2 GBs isn't *that* expensive or that much trouble to fit on a motherboard. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lilian Oswaldo-Cruz <lilian.oswaldocruz@xxxxxxxxx> To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 7:30 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: New (to me) computer Windows XP will only take up to 3 gb of memory. Until last week that is what I had! Pentium 4 is good! With a larger HD you will have a good desktop, IMHO :o) Regards Lil On Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 11:05 PM, <HandsomeBlck@xxxxxxx> wrote: > Hi all, > My wife's job upgraded their computers and sold the existing one >to the public for really cheap.
