Actually, all 32-bit operating systems will only use 3.1 GBs of RAM.  
Nevertheless, 2 GBs is the "sweet spot," meaning that less than that can become 
an "issue" if one runs a lot of apps at one time and price-wise, for most types 
of RAM, 2 GBs isn't *that* expensive or that much trouble to fit on a 
motherboard.

Windows XP will only take up to 3 gb of memory.  Until last week that is
what I had!  Pentium 4 is good!  With a larger HD you will have a good
desktop, IMHO :o)
