Normal.dot is the file that Word uses to store the default formatting used 
for ALL files created with Word.  If you modify Word's settings and tell it 
to apply those changes to all future documents, it will remember those 
changes by modifying the normal.dot file, which it uses as a sort of 
template for all of the documents created by it.  However, if you rename the 
file, Word will recreate the original normal.dot file the next time you open 
it.  It's an easy way to reset the program back to the way it was when it 
was first installed.
