wow - I heard from my neice in virginia beach, and she said around them is some pretty serious damage - but they lucked out for some reason - I think I mentioned - a little siding and some water thru window cracks on the sides. My husband talked to his friend in N.C. and he finally heard about his place. supposedly, a screen on a deck door blew off but was there! He is back off of the ocean - I guess sort of behind some dunes. but they said just a short distance - south of them, got hit really bad, so it sort of came in south of him, around him and up north - so the boys are still heading down Oct. 1st to play golf - amazing -But I gather lots of roof's from the homes on the ocean blew off - or at least lost their shingles. so - I said, does that make him ocean front now? Where was it - I saw on the news, that an island lost its bridge, so can only be accessed by a ferry now??? My mom has emhasema and is on oxygen. about a year ago they put her on liquid oxygen - she wasn't happy about it - that means she is getting worse, and it is different. But ! in a power outage, I don't have to worry that she doesn't have electricity to get her oxygen to her. It is just a large tank filled with it, and a valve that dispenses it as she breathes. She still has an electric one, in case she runs out of her liquid. That would be very frightening to not have oxygen when you needed it. My mom can't go long at all now without it - I'm glad the man is ok and it all worked out so great! and the ambulances could get thru! Mother nature sure is an odd one! crisS ----- Original Message ----- From: Poppy0206@xxxxxxx To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2003 4:47 PM Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Isabella in Portsmouth va Hi folks, Just wanted to tell a little how Isabel hit my mom's neighborhood. My mom lives in Portsmouth Va about 30 minutes from Virginnia Beach. I believe the eye did go right over us there. We were without hot water, and power until this morning. Our traffic lights were out all over the area until this morning. I did find a grocery store open on the third day that was using a generator, but of course no ice or meat, etc..we seeked out charcoal, more batteries, none of course. Our neighbor had a little grill that we got hot water from in the morning for a cup of instant coffee. I was able to track down some ice at a shopping center parking lot where the salvation army was handing out a few free bags. It was pretty hot in Portsmouth every day about 85 degrees and mom and I raked and raked, and bagged and bagged tree limbs, pine straw, etc.. We had a neighbor across the street that had to have an ambulance come in the middle of the hurricane, he has emphysema and was on oxygen. He had tried to get a generator going in his garage and got bad fumes. Then when he returned from the hospital a day later, his neighbor went over every few hours to fix up his generator and keep it going in his driveway. He also helped to clean his yard up and stuff. We kept hearing sirens every day and night, scarey. Another issue for us In portsmouth were very long gas lines. That was so weird to m e as I have never had to wait in line for gas like that before. I have a few digital pics that I did take of some down trees. One big one landed on a neighbors roof and another through a neighbors kitchen, no one was hurt thank God.
