Hey Andy,

Reading this thread has made me want to check out EAC and Lame. Could you
post the URLs?

When you run the set up, it can set up in two ways-you get the option 'I'm
an expert user and want all the bells and whistles' and 'I'm a novice,
please hold my hand' (Or words to those effects!!). Each one sets it up
slightly different, but everything is easily 'tweakable'..You can get really
deep into it and start using the correct offsets for your writer (I'm not
going to begin explaining that one, but there are some excellent help sites
if you click 'help'.

The more obvious tweaks are how EAC reads a CD..When you installed the
program,, the chances are it's looked at your CD drive to discover all it
can about it-it is looking for whether your CD drive has an 'accurate
stream' feature, whether the drives caches audio data and whether the drive
can retrieve c2 error information..don't get too bogged down in the
technology of this (Though you can bone up on what they mean on the help
sites).

If you click EAC then Drive Options, you will get to see the main options
you can set for your extraction. In all likelihood, it will be set to
'Secure Mode' with one or more of the check boxes ticked, depending on the
capabilities of your drive. Under normal circumstances, using secure mode
will read a full CD in around 10-15 minutes-rarely will you get speeds past
x9, but you will get the most accurate possible extraction-it will scan over
and over a problem area until it get a read.

This is all well and good, but sometimes, you need to rip 'n go (Sounds like
a shampoo ad!!!)-To do this , you just need to select the 'Burst Mode'
option. It's worth doing this only if time is a consideration.

Setting up an mp3 encoder is a good idea too, as it can encode at the click
of a button. The encoder of choice is Lame. Download the Lame encoder, and
then under EAC, and 'compression options', point EAC toward where you have
save the Lame EXE.

going any deeper now will only serve to confuse-read the help sites and try
setting up your drive offsets, etc...

Cheers

Andy
