I see PC answered already, and his reply is detailed and good.

If interested in playing with other software, you might download
SnapStream from http://www.snapstream.com; that's what I use to record
shows.  Oh, they call it Beyond TV now, but still same program.  :)

Make sure that you have the latest version of DirectX and the latest
video drivers (might even try beta drivers, if available).  Checking
that you have the latest version of WMP might also help.
