Scott, thanks for the URL. Here is the story on the hard drive: Since scandisk would not work in SAFE mode and Disk Image would not build a disk image I used my secondary zip backup to zip up the folders and backed up the registry. Before reformatting the C: Drive I booted with the backup diskette and did a DOS scandisk. It took many hours for it to complete. Thought it would never finish. However to my amazement it actually worked and corrected all the "Cross Linked" problems. Running PowerMax diagnostic gave my C Drive a clean bill of health. Some diagnostics will query the SMART status first; you can look up the SMART status code (sorry, don't have a list handy; would have to hunt it down again) to find out what the drive says about itself. Thes utilities cause the drive to fix a problem by writing to the drive. Therefore, you'll need to back up your data before doing a repair. If the hard drive is mission-critical (such as for a server for a business), you may wish to RMA the drive even if the diagnostic says that the problem is fixed. --Scott. -------list-services-below----------- Regards, John Durham (list moderator) <http://modecideas.com/contact.html?sig> Freelists login at //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/lsg2.cgi List archives at //www.freelists.org/archives/pchelpers PC-HELPERS list subscribe/unsub at http://modecideas.com/discuss.htm?sig Latest news live feeds at http://modecideas.com/indexhomenews.htm?sig Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
