it's not the "software" you download on otn that oracle doesn't give you support for, it's the "development license" you agree to before downloading it, that in itself doesn't grant you any support. You have to obtain a license to use oracle in production, and there you got the option of also buying support for them.

Oracle support, and our sales guy, told me either place is ok. They said it's the same code as the CDs, but patches and updates are only available on metalink.
