I haven't used any sort of mat in years. The Optacon works just fine on
any flat surface. You can use a tiny paper clip to mark a page in a book
that you are currently reading. Another handy tool is something the size
of a small rock to act as a paper weight. You can use that to keep the
book from closing and, to hold your general place on the page.
