Obviously the LCD sets win on brightness. This is a major reason they are still
around in phones and other mobile devices. But my statement was based in
personal observation of LCD sets that claimed to be HDR versus standard 1080P
HD displays. The perceptual difference is small. Can LCDD keep improving?
Perhaps. There is certainly plenty of incentive to improve so they can keep all
those LCD fabs busy.
You are only considering one aspect of the problem: the display.
There is significant cost in creating and delivering 4K content,
Not an issue, right? Digital TV, as you say, "decouples" the display from the
content and transmission medium. 4K displays are the new normal, simply
because they are cheap enough. Even if most of the content on them will be SD
and HD for several more years.
I'll take this an agreement that we don't need 4K emission formats to deliver
high quality on 4K displays...
I'll bet you that HD sets will gradually disappear from store shelves, just
as SD sets have done.
They are certainly disappearing from the shelves right now. TVs are one of the
major big ticket buys this holiday season, and the vast majority of sales are
still HD not UHD.
As I keep repeating, there is no downside. HDR and WCG will add to the cost,
but 4K sets without HDR and without WCG are coming in at ridiculously low
prices. No reason to hand on religiously to HD sets.
No reason to upgrade either.
Ron just informed us about what can happen when compression is
abused,K
That's a whole different topic, Craig. Now you're talking about the
transmission medium. The SD image can be displayed just fine on a 4K set.
This was a specific response to your assertion that 4K will become the new
standard for TVs. We don't need to deliver 4K streams to take full advantage of
4K displays; but we do need to deliver higher quality samples (less compressed)
if we want to see any additional picture detail.

Craig
