Thanks Mark. This does a good job of describing the many significant
ambient light issues we are facing as we move to HDR.
Indeed. This, plus of course power issues, is why I doubt you will see HDR in
tablets and smartphones. "HDR mode," as we already belabored, is not HDR, but
essentially the *opposite*. Ambient lighting is what will prevent these
handheld appliances from displaying high dynamic range, not to mention that
super bright displays would draw lots of power.
From what Mark says, any display whose black level is 0.0005 nits is probably
wasted in most home environments. This leads me to think that the brighter LCD
HDR sets will have a better chance at delivering usable HDR in average homes.
Super bright 1000 nits, and less black 0.05 nits, might be a better overall
compromise, as opposed to 540 nits to 0.0005 nits for OLEDs
In the end, Hollywood will deliver 4K to theaters, and 4K versions
on Blu Ray and for streaming. But I expect 1080P streaming will
dominate.
There are two topics here: what the source material is, and what home displays
will be. My bet is that HDR sets for homes will be 4K, and that 1080p sets will
disappear in due course. Broadcast source material may well get more bang for
the buck by staying at HD levels and adding HDR. But the sets HDR is viewed on,
I bet, will be 4K sets regardless. Numbers sell.
