Indeed. This, plus of course power issues, is why I doubt you will see HDR in
tablets and smartphones. "HDR mode," as we already belabored, is not HDR, but
essentially the *opposite*. Ambient lighting is what will prevent these
handheld appliances from displaying high dynamic range, not to mention that
super bright displays would draw lots of power.
What rubbish.
Mobile devices that "could" support HDR already exist. Pretty much any mobile
device that uses an OLED display; but the internal processing must support
moving to 10 bit samples (or beyond.
And we are also seeing LCD based mobile devices that are offering increased
screen brightness, although they do not approach the >1000 nits peak brightness
that Mark tells us is needed to meet the SMPTE definition of HDR for LCD
displays.
So yes, it is likely that only larger fixed (plug in) LCD displays will be
feasible for HDR, but even here the ability to support the HDR specs will be
difficult. BUt with OLED, it is very feasible to offer HDR on mobile devices.
From what Mark says, any display whose black level is 0.0005 nits is probably
wasted in most home environments.
And mobile environments. As Mark pointed out, its even difficult to achieve in
theaters. But we can get close enough under controlled ambient light
conditions. THe displays I looked at at Best Buy were in a relatively high
ambient light environment, yet the OLED TVs were clearly superior to the LCD
displays, especially in the blacks.
This leads me to think that the brighter LCD HDR sets will have a better
chance at delivering usable HDR in average homes. Super bright 1000 nits, and
less black 0.05 nits, might be a better overall compromise, as opposed to 540
nits to 0.0005 nits for OLEDs
We'll see. the technology is evolving rapidly, and OLED is getting cheaper. But
the existing investment in LCD fabs suggests that we will see LCD TVs that
claim HDR performance levels.
In the end, Hollywood will deliver 4K to theaters, and 4K versions
on Blu Ray and for streaming. But I expect 1080P streaming will
dominate.
There are two topics here: what the source material is, and what home
displays will be. My bet is that HDR sets for homes will be 4K, and that
1080p sets will disappear in due course. Broadcast source material may well
get more bang for the buck by staying at HD levels and adding HDR. But the
sets HDR is viewed on, I bet, will be 4K sets regardless. Numbers sell.
Thanks for agreeing with my analysis. You don"t need 4K source to take full
advantage of 4K displays.
The first three charts in Mark's video so this dramatically. There is not much
benefit in moving from 2K to 4K pixel resolution, but this will happen from
many reasons we have already discussed. But there is a big improvement with
HDR. The logical solution is to use 1080P with HDR for high quality
broadcast/streaming, and lower resolutions with HDR for streaming as dictated
by bandwidth availability.

Craig
