Fortunately many of those before pictures are available online courtesy of LSU. http://cdm16313.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/search/collection/Tensas It's amazing how one company [Chicago Mill] could thwart the will of Congress, which was considering the Tensas Swamp National Park and the President, who supported it by cutting the remaining trees before the bill could be passed. They were able to do this by "employing" German prisoners of war at $.50 per day to cut all the trees down. It makes you wonder if the woodpeckers could have survived if Roosevelt had declared it a National Monument while Congress debated the merits of the National Park proposal. I should have mentioned that Shawneen and I saw a showing of "Ghost Bird" and met the filmmaker when it was shown in Portland several years ago. It was a powerful film, especially the then and now photos of the "Singer Tract" where Tanner captured his amazing recordings.
