Smith and Bybee Lakes in north Portland recently has been waxing and waning in activity, and it just waxed again. Conditions are excellent for shorebirds and now there are shorebirds on both lakes, though far more on Smith. I made a bad decision in travelling light and not bringing my good spotting scope and so I may have missed something. Best viewing on Smith was from the canoe launch. There were at least 100 peeps; many were too distant to ID but all that I could tell were LEAST SANDPIPERS. There were about 15 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, about 50 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, several PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 1 DUNLIN. There also are loads of ducks on both lakes with Bybee actually looking crowded. I saw MALLARD, GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN SHOVELER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and NORTHERN PINTAIL on the lakes and WOOD DUCK in the slough. Andy Frank
