Jim,

We use an Aruba solution that provides split access very similar to what Don
described, although on a much much smaller scale. We use Aruba's "instant APs",
which allowed us to avoid the cost of a controller - at least until we expand
the system a bit more, at which point the APs we selected are firmware
upgradable for use with the controller.

Staff machines are set up with a certificate that allows them onto the private
wi-fi and their internet access is filtered. We use Websense for filtering.
Public wi-fi routes out through a separate, unfiltered, FiOS line. City
provided smartphones and tablets, for the purposes of our network, are treated
just like public devices and are not allowed access to the private network and
are not filtered, although we've considered changing that and may yet.

All, I have a general question about WIFI? Do you provide it at your
facilities and to what extent do you secure it. We currently provide public
WIFI that is segregated from our wired network, but it is only a partially
managed solution that blocks sites by categories. We are getting pressure to
provide WIFI to all employees and the public with the employees being able to
access all network files and work related resources. That would be a
significant cost to secure and provide that type of service, so I just wanted
to see how/ and what everyone else was doing with WIFI at this point?
