[muglo] black spots on scanned pics

I am using an HP Scanjet 4600 to scan pics onto my computer so I can
upload them.

The scanned tiff files have large black rectangles on them. I re-booted
and then re-installed the software all to no avail. Is there another
fix or is my scanner pooched?
