Actually, the black squares are solid black, and take up an eighth of an 8 1/2 x 11 scanned paper. The second one, a receipt [2 x 3 in real life], was covered totally in black with small white areas in it sort of like a grid. It is as though some aspect of the scanning/recording process is flawed.
