I tried your suggestion and scanned the image as a gpeg rather than a tiff file. It did the same thing [in that large solid black squares fill the image]. However, the solid black squares are not in the same spot nor are they the same size. One area of the scanned image has a checker-type grid of rectangle black and white areas.
