I tried the picture placeholders option but to no avail.  Its office XP.

 I wouldn't advise renaming normal.dot without cogent reason ... What
version of Word? Each version has its own subtle but quite drastic
changes to the interface.  In Word 2003 I would expect Tools, Options,
View, Picture Placeholders (ON/OFF) to be the place to try ... But Word
2000 is different, I believe.
