As an additional comment. You may place the back end database on a server where all users have access to it. This does not make it a client/server database, although it sounds like it should be. All the processing is done on the front end machines. If you have a query that pulls from many tables, all the tables referenced in the query are sent to the front end machine. Then the query is run and results generated on the front end machine. This can take up huge amounts of bandwidth, and is a main reason network admins dislike MS Access. But like James describes a front end, back end set up does allow multiple connections to a single database without some of the issues associated with file sharing and locking. -Anthony -----Original Message----- From: James LaBorde [mailto:jlaborde@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 1:02 PM To: 'mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [mso] Re: FW: access-Pam Linda (and everyone one else interested), A front-end/back-end set up is pretty much what it sounds like. You have all of your tables containing all of your data in one database that is stored somewhere accessible by everyone. This is your "back-end" database. It is simply a repository for all of your data. The "front-end" is a separate database that contains all of the forms, queries, reports and code to run the database. It is linked to the back-end tables. This "front-end" is then copied to any workstation that will use it. This set up allows multiple users to have access to the same data, without having to have them share the same database. It reduces corruption (oops, the file won't open any more!) and contention (Hey, I can't open this, it says Joe has exclusive control!) in the database. To set it up. Split your database you have created. Create a new database and move all of your tables to it (This is your back-end). Next, create another new database and move all of your queries, forms, reports, macros(shudder), and modules to the new database (This is your front-end). Now open your front-end database and click File, Get External Data, Link Tables. Then navigate to where you have stored your back-end and link all the necessary tables. You are now ready to go. I, for one, would love to understand this better. Thanks. The first thing I would suggest is that you separate your database into a front-end with all of your queries, forms, reports and code and a back-end that holds just the data. ************************************************************* You are receiving this mail because you subscribed to mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or MicrosoftOffice@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To send mail to the group, simply address it to mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To Unsubscribe from this group, send an email to mso-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?Subject=unsubscribe Or, visit the group's homepage and use the dropdown menu.
