I had a 'phone call last weekend from a guy in Scotland. He rang to tell me he had just steamed his Winson Britannia - he was over the moon. We had met many years ago during one of the early outings with my Winson Brit. and had kept in touch ever since. So that makes a total of four Britannias that I know of having steamed. I know of four others under construction one of which will steam any day now and will put mine to shame another of which is being built to truly exhibition standards (steam operated drain cocks even). I had a father and son duo visit me a few weeks ago with a half built Winson Jubilee. I have little doubt that that too will, in a few years time, be doing the bizzo. I have also seen several 14xx locos running with varying degres of success. Clearly there will be many more engines out there that I am totally unaware of. I mention all of this to help correct the impression, held by many in the model engineering world, that these engines cannot be made to run. They can - if you are prepared to be ruthless in modifying and replacing many of the supplied parts. Finally, if you want to see what mine looks like - just take a look at the current Modelworks advert. Shame they didn't ask my permission though.
