Keith, please understand up front that I am replying
out of ignorance as MY Simplex is still a sheaf of
blueprints and hopes for the future.

I took a quick look at the prints, however, and it
seems that the Left-hand piston is half-way through a
stroke, and the Right-hand one ought to be 90 degrees
ahead or behind. I would therefore assume that the
valve is also at Dead center in the valve chest.

If you set the return cranks as per the blueprints,
and removed the valve chest covers and observd the
action of the valves, will you not be able to
determine the proper location of the return crank
before you tighten down the pinch screws?

Just a thought out of my ignorance and I will be very
glad to hear how you make out.

Al Messer
