Down near Chattanooga Tennessee, TVA hollowed out the top of Racoon Mountain and put turbines at the base. When the demand for electricity is slack, they pump water to the top of the mountain. When demand is heavy, they generate electricity by letting the water run back through the turbines. That, plus their hydroelectric facilities, plus some gas turbines allows them to keep the nuclear and coal-burning steam power plants running full speed while helping meet peak demand loads.
