I don’t particularly care for track pad so I don’t use one. I’m sure I could if
I needed to though, because I use an Iphone all the time. I’ve been using my
Mac for about 4.5 years or in that range. I still can use a computer with JAWS
on it, though now I don’t know a lot about the windows operating systems so I’d
be feeling my way a lot. Still, I’m able to help other occasionally who are
using windows with JAWS. I’d say one can’t expect to do things exactly the same
on a Mac and the system is set up differently, but to say you should forget
everything about windows doesn’t make much sense to me. I recall that in the
beginning, if I was trying to accomplish something and needed to ask how to do
it, windows was my only frame of reference. After people got done yelling about
how I should forget about windows they would give me the answer I needed and I
was fine. How would I ask the question with no frame of reference though or how
would I have any idea what I could accomplish if I didn’t refer to my past
experience? We’re all different and perhaps for some they do need to forget all
about what’s gone before. Sometimes though < think people make things much
harder than they need to be. Whatever you do, learn things a little at a time
and stay with it. Start by tackling the basic tasks first and keep adding.
Suddenly you’ll realize that you know all sorts of things and are well on your
way to using the new device.

Maybe I'm the only one here, but in my 5 years of using the Mac, I've never
used trackpad gestures. I can get around fine with just using the keyboard.
Maybe I'm old school, but my thinking is if you're familiar with a certain
method, why change it just because a newer method is also at your disposal?

Yes you need to spend I would say at least an hour or maybe 2 ad day on it
and using as many gestors as you can or at least the most common ones is Now
once you master the gestors then spending less time is ok but need to spend
some time with it each week to stay in tune.
Now the problem with any technology if you have to much of it you usually
don't get good at any of them. So I would Pick a couple or so and stick with
them.
For example: I would have maybe a windows OS if you want to and a Mac Os for
my computer and then maybe a IPad or iPhone one or the other and then which
one of these I choose would determine whether I got an Android phone or
tablet. Then If I wanted a book reader and such like that I would get say
something like the Victor Stream and this could be my digital recorder as
well. After something like this I would then think of maybe stopping and
just learning these devices very well. As too many things and you just get
confused and just don't have enough time to keep up and stay reasonable good
at using it. JMT

Like with any device, using it constantly and adjusting to it will serve
you best. Make sure you have a solid gesture foundation as well. The
gestures are the keys to the kingdom.

I still have the Kurzweil Personal reader in two pieces: the scanner

I haven't gotten rid of it because I can't sell it and I will not
throw it out, it works perfectly for reading books with consistent print.

We paid, at the time, $12000 for it. Ok, devices have advanced, but
it was really built well.

I am having trouble learning the Ipad, any advice will be welcome.
I'm told just sitting and practicing does the trick, maybe so.

I first heard DECTalk on the old Xerox Kurzweil standalone scanning
machine. If you're old enough to remember, it came in two parts: the
scanner and the `computer' which was designed like an attache case. I
fell in love with the voices (Perfect Paul, Betty etc.) there and then
and haven't looked back since, although I first acquired my DECTalk
hardware synth some eight years later.

Hello,
I tend to use either Samantha, or the UK female Siri, or even Karen.
On note takers, I'm pretty much stuck with eloquence, or the good old

has some strange things, especially if you use double brackets and
some strings around words....

The default US female voice is okay, but Alex is definitely a
favourite round here. *smile* On Windows I use wait for it deep
breaths DECTalk (software)

Well, that is true on the Mac any how! Or on IOS devices. I use
Alex on my iPhone.

Well, you can run windows on your Mac for the times you just got
to have it. I do think Mac is taking off more in the government and
enterprise sector now. Now will it continue the trend I just don't
know. Only time will tell.
Now if you are wanting to go this way just to save money on a
screen reader then this might not be the thing to do especially if
you use Excel a lot then you really need to use some kind of
windows and with a major screen reader like JFW. Now MS office is
supposed to be accessible on Mac now but will it continue to be
that way or will at some point it might not be again.
I don't have a Mac as of now I plan on getting one in the near
future but by no means will it be my only computer with just one OS
on it. I have window computer so will I put windows on my mac
don't know but I do want to get one and use it. As both Mac and
Windows have different things to offer and does better than the
other does. I have never found a one silver bullet that does
everything I want. So to me getting a Mac is just adding a tool to
my tool box. That is becoming very large now. JMT

Hi.

I've been using a PC for 25 years or so.

I notice more blind using Macs and as the voice is getting more
user friendly, as it seems, I'm wondering whether to get a Mac for
my next computer.

I use Excel for my business, banking and writing cheques and I
use Flash player to listen to recordings as I'm in the piano business.

I would appreciate some advice. I realize there are so many in
this group who are totally familiar with the Mac and with Voiceover.

Thanks, thanks so much.
