I changed the subject to keep things easier to sort for folks who want to
drop the thread.

So one of the interesting things about the iPad specifically is that I think
people don't realize you are blind, especially at first.  THis is a newer
experience because previously, our technology looked very blind specific or
strange to sited observers.  I've often said our devices had the fashion
cense of a brick.  This may have suited very specific needs for us but it
stood out more.
Now I use the same iPad that everyone around me is using.  My phone doesn't
look like a brick with big buttons on it, it looks like everyone else's
iPhone because it is.
I think what happens now, at least in my experience is that someone will sit
down, strike up a conversation with you and find that you're interesting and
intelligent before they realize you have a disability and then it's to late
for them to think negatively because you've won them over to some degree.
You're starting the experience from a place of commonality instead of
difference.  Some young lady for example may sit down next to you, take
interesting in your iPad because she has / wants / is interested in them,
through the course of conversation learns you have a job, don't live with
your mother and are put together and since you've hit all the really
important points she cares about and obviously fit the physically attracted
to you bit by picking you out of the other options by the time she realizes
your blind it's way down the list of things she really cares about.  WHere
as if you have some device that makes you stick out that initial
conversation may carry more baggage from societies general perceptions.
Does that make sense?
I don't in any way mean to say that I am hiding my blindness or think anyone
should, be real with what you are:) but think icebreakers because we all,
blind, sited or other wise need icebreakers of one form or another.
