[mac4theblind] Re: people's reaction to technology especially the iPad was Re: Apple announces Retina iPad model with 128 GB of storage, $799 and $999 price tag

Yeah, Kerri, but that's okay. It still gets us talking. I'm sure it's true that
some people come up to talk to me when they see my iPad or iPhone who would not
do so otherwise. Their curiosity overcomes their hesitancy or nervousness or
maybe even aversion because I look different. So overall it's a good thing. An
though I may be straying too far offtopic, I do want to say that i have some
sympathy for people's hesitancy or even for some people's fear or aversion.
Let's face it; if you hear somebody with a pleasant-sounding or interesting
voice, aren't you more inclined to trying to get to know that person than maybe
somebody whose voice grates on your nerves for some reason. And if somebody
seems eccentric or "strange" to you for some reason, don't you have to overcome
some aversion or hesitancy to approach them. I'm not saying it's right; I'm
just saying that most of us will have to admit that we all have those
tendencies that have to be overcome so we don't miss out on some wonderful
experiences and relationships. It's understandable for us to be angry and hurt
at some sighted people's attitudes, but I've certainly known blind people who
didn't want to be anywhere near people with cerebral palsy or speech
impediments or developmental disabilities. So maybe all of us need an
icebreakers sometimes and all of us have to face the challenges of broadening
our horizons despite our initial impulses. So if technology helps to break down
barriers even just long enough for people to get a glimpse of a person beyond
their sterotypes, that's just an extra bonus gained from the technology!
