yesterday I stood on a strand
and saw the potential for death first hand
latent in three jiggers of hubris
and a pinch of inattention

a student told me once how on this spot she drove her truck beside the water
wheeled with abandon on the sand
swam for her life when the cab filled up

to strut like Jack Flash at the wet bit's edge
and tarry
just a mite too close
is so tempting
whoomp
a wave breaks
faster than the rest
a quick run
and leap onto a log
sigh
the sea recedes...

...rolls the wood over
pins quicker
than a Burns High School wrestler

waterlogged wood is so heavy
that when the cold ocean bubbles up
it very unjustly
and swiftly
checks people out
