The US government could have detonated an atomic bomb on a remote pacific island and invited the world to watch. But no, they dropped it on 250,000 civilians. Better, faster effect.



The US faced potential losses of well over a million dead by invading the mainland of Japan, in a war forced on us, against opponents of outrageous brutality.


That the "demonstration" you suggest wouldn't have worked is confirmed by historical records of the Japanese themselves, and by the fact that after two explosions on their mainland, some hardliners still wanted to fight on.
