I first came upon the phrase "hardness of heart" in a book which happened to be
about religion. So that's what I associate it with. The book was, "The Gospel
According to Peanuts." I never use the phrase, because either by your
definition Julie or mine, I find it offensive.

I've always thought "hardness of heart" indicates that the hard-hearted one
is emotionally insensitive, or lacking in *feeling*, rather than a verdict on
their *belief*.
