Jerry,

There is a feature of Word that has been around since Word 97 at least,
called Extend selection mode. It seems similar to the feature you mention,
so I wonder it is the one you mean. Here is some information about it:

There is a Word feature called extended selection which can be used to
select the current word, sentence, paragraph or document. To activate this
feature, press the F8 key; JAWS will announce "extended selection mode on".
Once this mode is on, you can use standard navigation commands to move the
insert point around the document, but now the text between where the insert
point was when extend selection was turned on and the current insert point
position is will be selected.

With extended selection mode on, pressing F8 a second time will select the
current word, a third F8 will select the current sentence, a fourth will
select the current paragraph and a fifth will select the current document.
After each command, JAWS will read the selected text.

If focus is at the end of a paragraph when the F8 key is used, the second
press will select the current sentence (for there is no single word to
select), the third will select the paragraph and the fourth will select the
current document.

With extend selection mode on, any key that is pressed will be assumed to be
a navigation command. For instance, if a character is pressed, focus will
move to the next instance of that character (if it exists between the
current focus and the end of the document) and the text between the current
focus and that character will be selected. If that character does not exist
between the current focus and the end of the document, nothing will be
selected.

The Find feature can also be used once extend selection mode is turned on.
in this case, you can select from the current cursor position to the next
instance of whatever you search on in the document.

Once you have finished selecting text, the Escape key must be used to turn
selection mode off. Note, however, that the selected text remains selected.
