James,

Thanks. I know how to get into Preferences as Lois described, and I probably 
will do as you and she suggest. I confess that even though I've been in the 
Preferences dialogue, I just never noticed that particular option. I'll look 
for it this time. thanks again.

After you've updated, go to preferences and uncheck the check for updates at
start up checkbox.
