Reinstalling the operating system is a last resort option. There's usually a whole lot of an easier way of doing it, and it involves less of a headache on everyone's part. What it comes down to is, if you want to take all of maybe the 5 minutes risk of finding out what the problem is, start turning off suspicious programs that might be the cause of the computer's being slowed down. Virus scanners should be turned off only if you're sure you've ruled everything else out. As someone else on this list said, by default Windows boots up a lot of unnecessary things that could possibly slow things down for you, too. I would suggest that, until you know exactly what the problem is, any program you're not planning on using right away should be closed. This includes programs that would normally reside quietly in the system tray. Because, unfortunately, one of those programs that's residing quietly in your system tray may be doing so and happily guarding a good chunk of your system resources at the same time.

You probably won't like the sound of this, but some times computers just
need the OS reinstalled. If the computer was faster when you first got it,
you should consider this option.

hmmm, what version of windows are you running? 98? XP? XP cleans up after itself pretty well I've had it on this work computer for over 2 years and everything still runs fairly well. I've had xp on my home computer for 4 years and it is starting to slow down quite a bit. 3 or 4 minutes at bootup.

98SE didn't clean house very well and can drasticly slow down after a
year or 2

other things you might think about, is getting a cleaner for ad
aware, spy ware, etc. Defragging all that fun stuff.

Well, it's no secret JFW can at times be resource intensive. But, somehow, I doubt the performance hit you take running it will be very much different from if you didn't have it running. Particularly on today's computers. I've run several processes I know full well are more resource intensive than JFW, and this computer's nothing special, but it was still fairly fast all things considered.
