Hello Martin:

If I install the programs you suggest to an external drive, do they add entries to the Windows registry, add other files to the Windows operating system, Because if they do either of the above, the file allocation table files will be changed and therefore the physical layout of the disk will not be the same.

So, a piece of software that can be run from a different device, other than the hard drive, and one that does not make changes to the registry, would be ideal.

I downloaded and tried a data recovery program from ontrack yesterday on a different computer, however, the program was totally inaccessible.

Ontrack specializes in data recovery. Their services are not cheap. To have one of their engineers link to your computer, diagnose what is wrong and give you a report, costs $100.00. If you give them the go-a-head to recover the data, assuming their report indicates that there is data that can be recovered, the cost can vary from $300.00 to $2,225.00.

Also the machine is off-limits to you until they have finished the recovery process. Obvious, when you think about it.

I used their services several years ago. They were able to recover the entire contents of the drive. I think it cost me $400.00, at the time. Worth every penny.

Unfortunately, I cannot afford those prices at present, which is why I want to try the "do-it-yourself" approach, first!

I am also going to "google" for this type of software. I will let you know how I get on.

In the mean-time, any further suggestions and advice are more than welcome.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

I understand what you mean, but think, it is nesessary to run chkdsk.
For recovery, I am using: File Scavenger.
Not free, but when restoring, the full path can be restored too.
and good accessible.

A free alternative, is Restoration, the file is rest2514. It can restore, but not with the original path. When you pick files to restore, you have to find the restore button with the mouse or jaws-cursor if using Jaws. You can also restore, with alt-c for restore by copying file to other location. The recovered file will be restored to an other location, so no other files are overwritten.
You can download it at:

If I run CHKDSK,, the program might decide that the areas where the files I
cannot access are bad sectors and delete them from the file allocation
table.

This would also alter the physical layout of the drive, which in turn might
make it impossible to use any data file recovery software to recover the
lost files.

Before running CHKDSK, I would like to try and recover the files before
running chkdsk to fix any disk error problems.

Hello everyone:

Due to a computer crash while my hard drive was updating some files, there
are files on the drive which I can no longer access.

When I check the properties for the hard drive, the amount of space used
indicates just under 130GB, which is about what I would expect.

However, if I highlight all the folders on the hard drive when I am in the
root folder, the amount of used space is 184GB

Can anyone on the list recommend a suite of programs that I can use that
is
accessible for recovering the data and to repair the disk.

I have not made any changes to the drive since the crash.

I eagerly await any suggestions.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber
