I use exactly this method (parallel evolution in action!), power up and then hold the reset button in for 2 sec after the harddrive has audibly began to spin up, which is 1-2 sec after initial power up. There does seem to need to be a delay between the power up and the reset though for it to be effective. Result: 100% success from ~50% before using this procedure. On a slightly related issue when a ctrl-break fails to clear a crash the hardware can be left in an undefined state (worst case was I had to leave the machine disconnected from the mains for ~15min before it would power up). I wonder if the OS could be updated to make Control-Break do a full hardware reset, or disable it completely?
