There would be occasional HDD spin lock with both ext3 and ext4
filesystem due to kernel bug (this can be overcome by upgrading your
kernel or wait till 9.10).
Be assured, my data was intact even after the spin lock.
The reason why many recommend not to go with ext4 is due to the spin
lock and grub issue. You can overcome the GRUB issue with setting up
/boot with ext2 or ext3. I prefer ext2 as you don't need journaling for
/boot.
Remember spin lock is also the issues with ext3 under the same kernel.
I recommend you to create ext3 filesystem and then migrate it to ext4
and use.
