Sure it is... In India!
AFAIK, we don't have anything in our laws allowing software patents. So,
anything that Thompson wants to charge us is essentially illegal, because
India doesn't recognize their patent to begin with! ;-)
Anyway, I have a Creative Zen (beautiful device, all other considerations
aside), and I use libnjb (libnjb.sourceforge.net) and Amarok (amarok.kde.org)
to keep it in sync with my system - in fact, I don't even use the Zen in
Windows anymore, because libnjb and Amarok do everything I want them to do
with it (well, most things, anyway - and I have only myself to blame for
other things - I'm supposed to be the guy maintaining the Amarok NJB
plugin :-) )...
I'd suggest that you use something like Amarok and the Xine engine to play
mp3s. I haven't had any trouble with that particular front for years now...
