I dont know why u reboot to windows to listen to music.
Thats what i wrote in my mail. We cannot ask people. If it doesnt play out
of the box, the User would check for alternates. You cannot blame the User
for this.
if u want to
creative zen to play ogg u should ask them and not blame / curse GNU
/ linux tools lacking it.
I have specifically mentioned that the Companies need to make this happen,
which also tells that no blame is put on GNU/Linux tools.
in that case, u should go to alternative
music system instead of creative. plugin for mp3 which u had installed
has basic stuff that play mp3 and not other effects. and i guess u r
wrong that u r expecting GNU / Linux to provide that. in that case u
do not understood what GNU / Linux provides. If u need effects
equivalent to windows, then u must go for support oriented Linux / ask
creative to give binary drivers for linux.
Thats not the User's concern.
FYI, i play these formats in my linux box - mp3, wmv, avi, ogg, 3gp, mov.
i installed the needed software / plugins that is available in the
internet which are known to me.
for mp3 licensing check below links
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/14/mp3_tenth_birthday/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3
http://www.mp3licensing.com/help/index.html
http://www.iusmentis.com/copyright/nl/mp3/mp3legal/
Are these out of the box once you install?.Will a normal person be able to
do all these stuffs?
and u could understand why distros not bundling mp3 supports. M$ havethis will change only if mp3 is open sourced. i guess mp3 will never
paid to Thomson for supporting since its wmv format didnt succeed
much. u could check the "Licensing and patent issues" column from the
url http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3
u could check the licensed companies list here
http://www.mp3licensing.com/licensees/index.asp
more over, till redhat linux 7.3, redhat was able to play mp3 by
default. but during the release of redhat 8, mp3 license have been
changed i.e even decoders have to pay licencse.
now i hope u would understand why winamp, Microsoft were able to play.
This has to change.

Hi all,
Before reading my mail, I would like you all to read Open Source guru
advocates ideological
shift<
gonna
Thats running in my mind for more than 6 months. How far GNU/Linux is
geeks(likecompromise on the Desktop Market ?
The people who are going to use GNU/Linux as their Desktop arent
canus). They do not even know what a "command line tool" and no way you
learnmake him/her to learn, as he/she would tell, why would he/she has to
such!.
We do know that there are patent rights with Mp3,DVD etc., There are no
support for many plugin formats for the same reason too. If one needs
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ForbiddenItems#head-480f1c231662c4279ebc75f7298db407ee0a5593things to be done, he/she is redirected to pages like ,
- For Ubuntu <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats>
- For
Novell/SuSE<http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT7527984757.html>
- For
RedHat<
by
Dont these have to work out of the box if you really want it to be used
GNU/Linuxthe normal people ?
Yes, companies need to compromise and thats what M$ had done during the
start (Gud or Bad,one has to admit).
I would say this is one of the reasons, people fear of adopting
letinto Desktops.
When companies like Novell,RedHat have decided their target are Desktop
Users, why would they not get exclusive rights like how M$ has ?. Sure,
there should be a way. If M$ is able to do things, why not WE.
Take a GNU/Linux Desktop Oriented Distro, list out things what would be
required to make it still better(in terms of out of the box support),
helpus
prepare the list, take survey, and submit online the results. This will
manythe companies understand that there are quite large number of people
needing
these requirements.(I am sure they would know already)
There are many other things also that we need to compromise. There are
kindproprietary products in Linux itself (like, CrossOverOffice) which are
great
deal for Desktop Users. If we neglect them, and just strive for only
FREE(as,
Free of Cost), I think the situation would be the same and sure normal
people would not be able to use GNU/Linux.
Am not at all telling that GNU/Linux is not growing or there are only
pitfalls. These issues are something we need to keep track of.And my
andadvice would be to spread the word FREE as in FREE TO USE/REDISTRIBUTE
atnot as in FREE OF COST. That leads into a different scenario.
We are doing a good job in spreading about GNU/Linux by conducting LDDs
publicvarious institutions. Is there any way to conduct LDD for the normal
the?. If so, then , it would be great show and sure our voices will reach
http://freespire.org> ,Public, Media.
One of the main reason for me to be with Freespire <
Theyis their Vision on how to make GNU/Linux best in the Desktop Usage.
http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Summary_of_Proprietary_Components>outhave legal rights in giving out the restricted
formats<
areof the
box. Please dont think am here to spread about Freespire. These things
Desktopthe basic needs for a Desktop User.
The future of GNU/Linux is good if we make GNU/Linux the best in
Usage as stated by Eric Raymond.
