[Ilugc] BSNL Broadband connection not working in Linux(Debian Sarge)

Hi Sriram

BSNL Broadband is now working in Debian(Sarge) but this is what i did.I
configured my NIC to the static IP address 192.168.1.1 and then gave the
primary DNS and Secondary DNS too. After doing this i started rp-pppoe and
executed adsl-setup configured the parameters and did adsl-start but on
doing this though i was able to connect to the internet the conection got
disconnected every 3 mts i dont know the reason why this happened and in an
other terminal i was executing pppd which showed some welcome message and
then displayed the Primary DNS and secondary DNS and then gave some messages

                        "Serial Link seems to be disconnected"
                        "Couldnt increase MTU to 1500"
                        "connection terminated after 2.5 minutes"
Any Download i did at this point of time stopped after some 4 % or max 5 %
.Then to solve this i stopped using that rp-pppoe and then tried this which
ultimately worked :-)
i just executed /etc/init.d/pppd start and then tried connecting it now
works perfectly to log out the connection i just use /etc/init.d/pppd stop
to bring down the connection.

The reason why i tried this approach was the username and password
(admin/admin) didnt work at all so i was unable to use the browser based
administration .

192.168.1.1 is the IP address that the ADSL modem software assigns to
the ethernet NIC on the modem.

 So to have this should i install any software to have the browser based
tool. i right now
have rp-pppoe installed thats it .

No, to use the steps I have mentioned below, you do not need *any*
additional software like rp-pppoe etc.  Just a web browser.  that's
all.

what do i do for this? ifconfig eth0 up or ifconfig ppp0 up ? is this the
one you r talking about? how do u disconnect do u use ifconfig eth0 down??


Yeah, just use 'ifup eth0'.  after editing /etc/network/interfaces
file to configure its IP to 192.168.1.2

I am running Sarge and the BSNL broadband works nicely.  I am not
familiar with the approach you have taken, so I cannot help you debug
it.  However I can say that the following approach works:

1. Configure your NIC with static IP 192.168.1.2 and bring it up.
2. Open a web browser and point it to http://192.168.1.1 ;(This is the
browser based administration for the ADSL modem)
3. Use username and passwd (admin/admin - can be changed later)
4. Go to the ADSL setting tab.  The default would be Bridging, Select
PPPoE.
5. Enter your BSNL username and password in the appropriate box.
6. Enter the primary and secondary DNS server addresses in the appropriate
box.
7. Save the settings.
8. Now, to force the link to BSNL up, you need to ping the nameserver
IP from your computer.  I have not found any other way to do it.

The box also has a dhcp server setting.  I enabled this as well.  I
find it very convenient to have all the settings and config on the
modem itself, the only step you need to do after booting into your
LInux is Step 8.  So, I can just boot into Knoppix/any live CD and go
online instantly.
