Apples and Oranges - AFAIK, the Acer 5002 is the only 64-bit
notebook available in India now. No IBM Thinkpad or Dell uses an
AMD 64 CPU, so they're stuck at 32-bit for the foreseeable future.
Instead, you can spend a little more and get a good,
sturdy laptop that will help you in the long run.
In the long run, any piece of computer hardware will have
depreciated in value to zero due to rapid obsolescence.
I will recommend the Thinkpads.
All Thinkpads are now sourced from Lenovo - the much-vaunted
sturdiness is probably a thing of the past. The last Thinkpad which
was both sturdy and reliable was the 1996 Thinkpad 760xl, from 1996.
Present-day Thinkpad batteries seem to fail in less than a year,
while the original battery from my 760xl is still chugging along at nearly
full capacity after 10 years.
Incidentally, I inspected an Acer 3002 (32-bit predecessor of the 5002)
closely, and the build quality was comparable to the Lenovo-built TP R50e.
In fact, the hinges were sturdier on the Acer than the Thinkpad.
My main complaint is that Acer chose an SiS chipset with UMA instead
of going with separate AGP graphics, for both the 3002 and 5002. I
detest integrated shared-memory graphics - it rates only slightly better
than Winmodems and Rambus on a list of crappy hardware ideas foisted
by marketroids.
I think somebody should bell the cat, and at least check if Knoppix or
similar boots cleanly on the Acer 5002.
