Yes, we need to be familiar with how things work, and I hope, between APH and LevelStar, between those of us who use Vista, and XP, that someone can find some answers for everyone. And yes, we did know that this would be complicated, and that we would need to do a lot to support it. We have no problem with that. I have been out of town the last couple of days, so am jus getting to all this email. Yes, I probably should send a few file sharing hints to the list, as I think there are some things that can be of value. But, we won't document it. The reason we won't is that it would take an entire manual by itself. And where do we stop? There are 3 versions of XP, 5 versions of vista, and what about Mac users, and Linux users? Everything that can be documented on the Icon/Braille + side of it is documented, and there is also plenty of documentation about how to set things up for each operating system on the various websites for those OS's, but the rest, unfortunately, can be so individual to your specific system, there's no way we could ever cover it all. By the way, have you looked at the Braille Note's documentation on Networking? If you've set it up, you must have. What do you see in there about vista, XP, or anything else for that matter?

If we documented Microsoft, we'd appear to favor Microsoft, but eeven taking on the task of covering all those OS's is an impossible one. So, we'll give you as much help as we can on list and through tech support, but that's all we can do. I do apologize that Michael and I implied that Vista was not tested. No one at LevelStar has a Vista machine, but obviously, those at APH do, and did test it.

As for it being as easy as it appears, it has been for some people, and if all goes well, it should go as I demoed it. but I actually had my own share of problemms setting things up, but they aren't necessarily the same ones others are having. All we can do is try things, and if that doesn't work, try something else. That sounds very unorganized, and not very knowledgeable, but I did my own bit of research on Microsoft.com with my own troubles, and I discovered that there is such a wide range of issues that can get in the way that, it's really all I know to say. I hope that someone is abel to help you get things resolved soon. Only one more thing I can think to ask as far as my own knowledge goes. Do you have more than 1 firewall running? Sometimes if you're running both Norton and Windows Firewalls, or any multiple firewalls that can cause a problem. If worse comes to worse, you may need to edit your registry to allow for annonymous log ons, but if that were the case, I wouldn't think your other machines could gain access.

Anyhow, we'll keep working on it.
Jenny

Hi, Jenny. Know that I am not upset any more today, and that I think very
highly of you and the levelstar and APH staff.
I have absolutely no regrets about buying this unit. I tell every blind
person I talk to about what a great unit it is and how far ahead of the
competition it is.
I just wanted to reply to your statements.
I am absolutely, positively sure this is braille plus and/or icon
related<grin>.
My wife and I checked out my network last evening from her computer. We can share files between our two desktop computers as well as her laptops, which
are vista and xp. My daughter can use her laptop on our network when she
comes to visit us.
I can even set up sharing wirelessly with my computer on my braille note.
So everything from the computer side is correct.
I had typed the path in correctly to my music folder as well.
I have even set up a shortcut on my desktop which allows me to see all of
the shared folders on my braille plus and can transfer to and from those
folders.
I just can't set anything up on the braille plus side.
I understand that there is no documentation for setting up file sharing,
although I think there should have been at the time of release.
Perhaps it should have been a chapter in the manual just as would be for
using the other new features.
I also understand that you were just trying to show us the new features of
the 1.1 release; so your demonstration of file sharing was by no means
complete nor meant as a tutorial.
I also concede that at some future date, you will be creating tutorials for
all of the new features of this release.
But this is much more complicated than most of the other new features and,
therefore, much harder to comprehend and set up.
You must have guessed that users would find this much more difficult to set up than moving contacts to another list, understanding the bookshelf or feed
folders or grasping the other new features.
You are going to have people contacting you for help setting up sharing on
both xp and vista.
I have seen people with xp on this list having trouble getting things to
work. This surprised me because in your demo, on your xp machine, it worked
so well.
My mistake was in thinking this would be as easy as you made it appear
during your demo.
And for that, I apologize.
I do have something from the pc side, at least, for now, and transferring at
375 to 400 kbps is sure better than by USB at 7 kbps.

Paul,

While it is true that testing was not done with Vista, and maybe should have

been, there is no documentation on how to set up with XP either other than
my podcast which, is more about demonstrating an example of how to access
shared files from the unit. I did not go over how to set things up on the
PC side of things in XP or any other operating system. If you check out
other PDA's that support netwowrking, you will find that the only
documentation provided is on the side of the PDA. It is up to you to
research how to set things up on the computer side of things. We cannot be
responsible for knowing the ins and outs of every operating system,
Microsoft or otherwise. You might wish to check out Microsoft.com to look
through their knowledge base concerning troubleshooting network issues. i'd

be curious, have you tried to access shared files on your vista PC from
another PC? In other words, are you sure this is specifically Braille +
related?

I am really upset.
I'll admit that I haven't read all of my 400 messages yet.
I am glad those with xp are having good experiences with file sharing.
But those of us with vista so far have been left out in the cold.
At the risk of getting kicked off this list, I am really upset.
I talked with Michael at level star today. I think a lot of Michael. He's
a
pretty neat guy.
But he said no testing had been done with vista with regards to file
sharing
and had no ideas of what to do other than turning on the guest account
which
did nothing to resolve the problem.
Words like irresponsible and reprehensible come to mind.
Vista has been out for well over a year now and no one on the development
or
beta teams thought to test the icon with vista?
How can this be?
Michael's thought was that perhaps people are afraid of it.
Well, as of January 2009, you won't be able to buy a computer with XP.
One would think that level star and/or APH would get with the program and
use the current operating system in their tests of the icon, braille plus,
or any other software for the computer or related to those devices..
This is the current operating system; not windows xp; not windows 98, 95
or
DOS.
Documentation should have been put out at the time of release for file
sharing with xp as well as for vista.
So, now, I am unable to use a feature on which I was counting.
Now, I am forced to wait until someone on the development team gets their
hands on a vista machine and solves this problem.
I respectfully submit my name as an interested beta tester for all future
releases, both hardware and software so at least someone with a vista
machine will test these applications to make sure they are ready for the
current operating system.
