Can Ubuntu run on a p3/500?
It "can" with at >= 256MB of RAM.However, the *buntu's are heavy on the CPU as they load a lot of services for hardware that you "might" use. Turning a few things off improves things but you have to know what to tweak and get yours hands a bit dirty. Xubuntu is a little lighter and might be more suitable.
Debian Etch is a leaner and would run well, but requires a little more work to setup.
Fedora would run OK but requires some initial tweaks to the repositories and yum. Fedora is not the best choice for beginners.
PCLinuxOS might run OK, not fast. Both Don and Lisa have experience with PCLinuxOS.
