Nice to hear from you Paul! Glad to hear you are having some fun and
success with Ubuntu.

There is quite a bit of effort going into getting the power saving support
(Standby/Hibernate) to work on more hardware. I expect to see wider support
within the next year or so. One of the biggest problems is related to the
video chipsets and related vendor support. ATI/AMD based video cards
general have the most problems waking up after entering Standby. I have had
more luck getting Hibernate to work then Standby,

Hibernate does work on an older Dell CPx laptop (Ubuntu) and on my home
desktop (Fedora 8). Standby has worked on my wife's Dell Inspiron 1100
laptop on most Ubuntu Releases beginning with 6.10. It has an Intel Video
chipset which general will "play nicely". However, I don't have it enable
right now because Standby will not wake-up for "cron" jobs and I have a
cron script setup to sync her disk drive to the file server daily.
