My system has been upgraded several times, so it's definitely not a
clean install anymore.

mkomu@bling:~$ dpkg -l resolvconf
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

ii resolvconf 1.63ubuntu14 name server information handler
mkomu@bling:~$ dpkg -l dnsmasq
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

ii dnsmasq 2.59-4 Small caching DNS proxy and DHCP/TFTP server
mkomu@bling:~$ ps axu|grep dnsmasq
nobody   13946  0.0  0.0  28824  1292 ?        S    09:31   0:00
/usr/sbin/dnsmasq --no-resolv --keep-in-foreground --no-hosts --bind-interfaces
--pid-file=/var/run/sendsigs.omit.d/network-manager.dnsmasq.pid
--listen-address=127.0.0.1 --conf-file=/var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf
--cache-size=0 --proxy-dnssec
mkomu    14931  0.0  0.0   9392   924 pts/0    S+   09:33   0:00 grep
--color=auto dnsmasq
mkomu@bling:~$ ls -ld /etc/resolv.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Jul 11 09:30 /etc/resolv.conf ->
/var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf

Note: I am not sure if the resolv.conf link is the vanilla configuration
but it was the easiest way to fix totally busted DNS configuration.

Title:
  DNS proxy on Ubuntu precise

Status in Host Identity Protocol for Linux:
  New

Bug description:
  DNS proxy does not work in Ubuntu precise because dnsmasq has
  mandatory and has been integrated in rather interesting way. Note:
  fixing this should not affect, e.g., Debian or Fedora.
