The reason Vista/OSX use those 3D effects is because they can. Both OSX and
Vista use the 3D accelerator card present on most new computers to present
the 2D desktop. Why? It's faster. Using just 2D instructions, when a
window is brought to the front from behind other windows, it must be redrawn
- a call is made to whatever thread is managing it which repaints a portion
of the screen. 3D accelerator boards are capable of doing this entirely
within hardware. As far as the window threads are concerned, they're always
"visible."

I agree, that's always the problem I have with all vista/OSX effects with "3D" positioning of windows and suchlike. Not only is the display 2D, also the mouse is a 2D pointing device - so it seems foolish to attempt to add another dimension into things when we don't have the tools to either display or control it...

I suppose "constant perceived progress" is necessary in a commercial OS
world, even if it doesn't actually improve the user experience.
