Yes, that suggestion has come up before - specifically I have heard a
couple recommendations that we purchase VPS hosting (our own virtual
server) which we can upgrade memory/cpu/disk/bandwidth on as needed.

This would allow us to install whatever we want, and scale it as necessary.

I have not personally reviewed the pricing on such solutions, but I'd
like to investigate this avenue further.

A dedicated physical server would also be an option, although I would
feel better if a dedicated provider was maintaining the redundancy for
us.

We could of course have multiple people with access to the various
pieces, with proper use of permissions as necessary to prevent
unexpected disasters :)
