IIRC the situation described was:

     -----

     -----      \
                 \
     -----        \ -----
     | b |---------+| d |
     -----        / -----
                 /
     -----      /
     | c |-----'
     -----

Which is perfectly legal given the i/o constraints we decided on, so
plugin a writes to d's in buffer, plugins b and c += into it.
